FANTASIA annonce les premiers titres de sa programmation 2020

Afin de se conformer aux directives gouvernementales et de santé publique, et pour assurer la sécurité des festivaliers et de son équipe, Fantasia tiendra sa 24e édition en ligne du 20 août au 2 septembre prochain.
Par le biais de la plateforme Festival Scope, les festivaliers auront accès, de partout à travers le Canada, à un programme complet de films, de panels de discussions et d’ateliers.
Le festival est heureux de dévoiler les premiers titres de cette édition virtuelle dont le coup d’envoi sera lancé le 20 août par la présentation de THE RECKONING de Neil Marshall.
THE RECKONING
Thriller d’aventure campé dans l’Angleterre de 1665, période où la Peste sévissait et hantait le pays, THE RECKONING met en vedette Charlotte Kirk (OCEAN’S 8), Sean Pertwee (DOG SOLDIERS, DOOMSDAY), Joe Anderson (THE GREY, THE CRAZIES), Steven Waddington (THE IMITATION GAME, LAST OF THE MOHICANS), and Emma Campbell-Jones (DOCTOR WHO). Considéré comme l’un des titres les plus attendus de l’année, le film de Neil Marshall fait étrangement écho aux inquiétudes mondiales actuelles. Notons que c’est la 2e fois que le réalisateur britannique a l’honneur d’ouvrir le festival Fantasia puisque son film THE DESCENT avait ouvert les festivités en 2005.
8 PREMIÈRES MONDIALES DONT 2 FILMS CANADIENS
Parmi les titres annoncés, notons déjà 8 premières mondiales dont 2 titres canadiens : THE CURSE OF AUDREY EARNSHAW de Thomas Robert Lee, l’histoire d’une mère et sa fille suspectées de sorcellerie dans une communauté rurale canadienne. Le film, co-produit par George Mihalka est l’un des films d’horreur occulte le plus surprenant depuis HEREDITARY; COME TRUE, 2e long-métrage du scénariste et réalisateur canadien Anthony Scott Burns, science-fiction noire qui relate le parcours d’une adolescente rebelle incapable de rentrer chez elle; dans UNDERDOGS de Chino Moya, conte fantastique et humour noir sont au rendez-vous. Un film visuellement époustouflant en forme de voyage à travers une Europe en déclin qui met notamment en vedette Geza Rohrig (SON OF SAUL) et Johann Meyers (SNATCH); Près de 25 ans après la sortie de TROMEO AND JULIET, Lloyd Kaufman et la troupe de TROMA sont de retour, dans leur style unique, avec une interprétation totalement déjantée de LA TEMPÊTE de Shakespeare, #
AUTRES TITRES EGALEMENT ATTENDUS
Fantasia présentera également en première nord-amércaine, l’adaptation très attendue du légendaire manga BARBARA de Osamu Tezuka (créateur d’ASTRO BOY) dont on célèbre le 90e anniversaire de parution. Intitulé TEZUKA’S BARBARA (Première Nord-Américaine), le film est réalisé par Makoto Tezuka (LEGEND OF THE STARDUST BROTHERS) et mis en images par le directeur photo Christopher Doyle (IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE, HERO); Remarqué à la Berlinale en début d’année, SLEEP (Première Nord-Américaine) est le premier film de l’allemand Michael Venus. On y retrouve la vedette de TONI ERDMANN, l’actrice Sandra Hüller aux côtés de Gro Swantje Kohlhof (NOTHING BAD CAN HAPPEN); 12 HOUR SHIFT (Première internationale) scénarisé et réalisé par Brea Grant devait initialement être lancé au Festival de Tribeca au printemps. Le film, sur fond de crise des opioïdes aux États-Unis, dépeint le quotidien d’une infirmière toxicomane (interprétée par la remarquable Angela Bettis vue dans MAY) dans cette comédie noire prenant acte à la fin des années 90. Le film met également en vedette Chloe Farnworth, David Arquette, and Mick Foley; 2e long-métrage de Natasha Kermani (IMITATION GIRL),LUCKY (Première Internationale) devait être lancé au festival SWSW. Le film met en vedette Brea Grant (réalisatrice de 12 HOURS SHIFT), qui a aussi scénarisé le film, dans le rôle d’une auteure soudainement suivie par un mystérieux homme masqué.
LE CINÉMA D’AUTEUR INTERNATIONAL QUI ÉCLIPSE LES LIMITES DU GENRE
Au sein de la section Camera Lucida, section compétitive dédiée au cinéma indépendant qui repousse les limites du genre et refuse les étiquettes, on retrouvera entre autres : LABYRINTH OF CINEMA(Première canadienne), tout dernier film du réalisateur japonais Nobuhiko Obayashi, décédé en avril dernier; LAPSIS (Première Internationale) de Noah Hutton, comédie dramatique de science-fiction qui écorche notre rapport à la modernité dans les environnements de travail, initialement prévue pour un lancement au festival SWSW cette année; TIME OF MOULTING (Première Nord-Américaine), drame psychologique poignant, planté dans l’Allemagne de 1970, qui marque un début de carrière très prometteur pour la réalisatrice Sabrina Martens dont c’est le premier long-métrage.
Tous les titres de la section Camera Lucida sont éligibles au Prix AQCC-Camera Lucida remis par un jury composé de membres de l’AQCC et de la FIPRESCI.
TOUJOURS LA PART BELLE AU CINÉMA D’ANIMATION
La section Axis du Festival, réservée au cinéma d’animation pour petits et grands, présentera notamment : le film mexicain A COSTUME FOR NICHOLAS (Première canadienne) du réalisateur Eduardo Rivero,film d’aventure fantastique racontant l’histoire de Nicholas, un garçon de 10 ans atteint de Down Syndrome; et la comédie choc estonienne, réalisée en stop-motion, THE OLD MAN MOVIE (Première nord-américaine) de Oskar Lehemaa, Peeter Ritso and Mikk Mägi.
Le service offert sera géo localisé et réservé au public canadien, permettant ainsi aux nombreux cinéphiles à travers le pays de profiter du Festival.
L’édition en ligne de Fantasia aura lieu du 20 août au 2 septembre. Une deuxième vague de titres seront annoncés en juillet tandis que l’ensemble de la programmation sera dévoilé au tout début du mois d’août suivie par la mise en vente des billets pour le Festival.

Montreal – Tuesday June 9, 2020 – The Fantasia International Film Festival will be celebrating its 24th edition as a virtual event accessible to movie lovers across Canada, with a wild assortment of scheduled screenings, panels, and workshops taking place online from August 20 through September 2, 2020. The decision to launch a digital edition of the famed genre festival was born from Fantasia’s desire to keep the health and safety of its attendees a top priority during the current global health crisis, while still offering daring, much-needed new genre entertainment to residents of Canada and supporting the breakout filmmakers of the year. Fantasia is excited to reveal a selected first wave of titles.
AN EVE OF RECKONING FALLS UPON FANTASIA’S OPENING NIGHT
Fantasia’s 24th edition will open with a special screening of Neil Marshall’s recently completed cinematic powerhouse THE RECKONING. A poignant and horrific period thriller set in 1665 against the backdrop of the Great Plague and the subsequent witch hunts in England, THE RECKONING stars Charlotte Kirk (OCEAN’S 8, NO PANIC WITH A HINT OF HYSTERIA), Sean Pertwee (DOG SOLDIERS, DOOMSDAY), Joe Anderson (THE GREY, THE CRAZIES), Steven Waddington (THE IMITATION GAME, LAST OF THE MOHICANS), and Emma Campbell-Jones (DOCTOR WHO). A vivid, compelling and confrontational film whose themes are frighteningly pertinent to today’s concerns. TEZUKA’S BARBARA is the abrasively jazzy adaptation of Osamu Tezuka’s adult manga of the same name. The Camera Lucida section unveils its first titles:
- With the passing of director Nobuhiko Obayashi in April of 2020, cinema lost a titan. His final film, LABYRINTH OF CINEMA (2019) is deeply humanist text: an endlessly delirious career coda and a voyage through Japan’s wartime and cinematic history. Canadian Premiere
- Originally slated to launch at this year’s SXSW, Noah Hutton’s LAPSIS follows activist documentaries DEEP TIME and CRUDE INDEPENDENCE with this brilliant skewering of the absurdity of contemporary work environments, leaving no stone unturned: from the sharing economy to healthcare profiteering and the increasing game-ification of labor. This is speculative fiction at its most relevant.International Premiere
- An entrancing debut for German director Sabrina Mertens, TIME OF MOULTING unfolds as a series of meticulous domestic tableaus, slowly morphing into a disturbing descent into a young girl’s inner turmoil. Crushing, and not for the faint of heart. North American Premiere
All titles will compete for the AQCC-Camera Lucida prize, awarded by a jury of critics from the Québec’s Critics Association (AQCC), member of the FIPRESCI.
FANTASTIC BEASTS AND GROSS-OUT GAGS FILL FANTASIA’S ANIMATION SECTION
Fantasia’s Axis section unveils its first two selections – one to guide young ones as they grow up, the other for older folks who defiantly resist growing up.
- Mexican feature A COSTUME FOR NICHOLAS, directed by Eduardo Rivero,is a wild and colourful fantasy adventure. Canadian Premiere
- Estonian country-bumpkin shock-comedy THE OLD MAN MOVIE, directed by Oskar Lehemaa, Peeter Ritso and Mikk Mägi’s hugely successful YouTube series has become a high-water mark for stop-motion animation, and a glorious new low in lowbrow laughs! North American Premiere
All film screenings will be geo-blocked to Canadian audiences and only accessible from within the country, vastly expanding the number of viewers Fantasia can engage with outside of Quebec.
Fantasia’s 24th edition will be held online from August 20 to September 2. A second wave of Fantasia 2020 titles will be announced in July and its full lineup will be revealed in early August, with ticket sales commencing shortly afterwards.
